Paula Sánchez (cello, voice, materials, electronics)

Paula Sánchez operates at the intersection of experimental music, free improvisation, and performance art. Her work focuses on composing and deconstructing evolving sound spaces. Using extended playing techniques and unconventional materials such as plastic, glass, or natural elements, she combines sound with voice and electronics. Each performance is created in the moment: a physically present, improvised sonic event that forms new relationships between sound, space, and audience.

Sánchez studied cello at the University of San Juan in Argentina. She later completed two master’s degrees: one in Improvisation at the Musik Akademie Basel and one in Contemporary Art Practice / Sound Art at the University of the Arts Bern. Since 2018, she has been active in the European contemporary music and free improvisation scene, performing in numerous concerts across Switzerland, France, Germany, and Spain.

John Edwards (double bass) & Caroline Kraabel (alto saxophone, voice)

Caroline Kraabel and John Edwards have collaborated for many years, both as a duo and in larger ensembles, developing an intuitive, physical, and consistently surprising improvisational language. They arrive directly from the Taktlos Festival 2026, and Carovana091 takes this unique opportunity to present them to the Locarno audience.

John Edwards began his career in the London improvisation scene alongside Roger Turner and Maggie Nicols. He later became one of the two double bassists in Kevin Martin’s powerful industrial project God and established himself as a central figure in groups and collaborations with Lol Coxhill, Evan Parker, Harry Beckett, John Butcher, Roscoe Mitchell, Charles Gayle, John Tchicai, Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzmann, Sunny Murray, Zoh Amba, Sun Mi Hong, Camilla Nebbia, and many others. With over 150 released albums and hundreds of collaborations, Edwards is today one of the most in-demand double bassists in Europe. His most recent album, Lisbon Solo, was released in May 2025.

Caroline Kraabel, born in the United States and moving to the UK at the end of the punk era, co-founded the legendary sound art radio station Resonance 104.4 FM. She composes for large vocal and saxophone ensembles and, since the 2000s, has developed live radio performances, often walking and performing through the streets of London, sometimes accompanied by her young children. She leads the ONe_Orchestra New, an ensemble of improvising musicians that includes transfeminine, transmasculine, non-binary, and cis-feminine performers. For Resonance FM, she also produced the interview series Why Is Improvising Important?

Among her numerous collaborations are Khabat Abas, Susan Alcorn, Bex Burch, Teresa Hackel, Charlotte Hug, Hyelim Kim, Louis Moholo, Maggie Nicols, Rowland Sutherland, Pat Thomas, Cleveland Watkiss, and Robert Wyatt. Her sound film London 26 and 28 March 2020: imitation: inversion was awarded the Ivor Novello Award for Best Sound Art Composer in 2021.
