Descrizione

Félicie Bazelaire (solo double bass) — Fascination

Félicie Bazelaire has developed an electroacoustic setup that allows her to perform live with previously recorded double bass sounds. In this way, she creates arrangements combining rough sonic textures, high-frequency harmonics, singular melodies, and organic rhythms.

After exploring, in 2024, the phenomenon of autophony with the album OTOS released on the nunc. label, Bazelaire now turns her attention inward, in an abstract way guided by the emotions that shape the musical framework. The physicality of sound enables her to express her sensations directly.

Through various recording techniques and sonic materials — beats, percussive elements, harmonics, creaks, and more — she explores the extreme timbral qualities of the double bass. The instrument gradually dissolves into a turbulent and powerful sonic landscape.

Fascinations marks a new phase in her artistic journey. This ever-evolving piece invites listeners on a dynamic journey through the intimate space of the “fascinations” that arise between Félicie Bazelaire and her double bass. These fascinations act like spells — through sight, listening, and the body. They activate a continuous exchange of ideas, movements, and structures: a gesture generates a sound that opens a thought, which in turn generates a movement from which a form emerges. These fascinations resonate equally within the double bass and within the artist’s body and mind.

Initially trained as a cellist, then as a double bassist and in music pedagogy at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Félicie Bazelaire has developed an artistic practice situated between experimental music, improvisation, and autonomous compositional forms.

At the center of her work is the double bass as a sonic instrument. In search of raw and primordial sounds, she explores all the possibilities of the instrument through various performance techniques and recording systems. Between acoustic and electroacoustic approaches, she creates dense, drone-like soundscapes that appear both improvised and composed.
