Highly recommended: Jane in Ether – Oneiric

Oneiric means “dreamlike” - a fitting title for the latest CD by the Berlin‑based trio Jane in Ether. The group, founded in 2019, consists of recorder player Miako Klein, pianist Magda Mayas, and violinist Biliana Voutchkova. 

The trio focuses on spontaneous improvisation in the moment, exploring the dynamic and timbral possibilities of their instruments. Their sound emerges from the interplay of recorder, piano, and violin/voice, creating fragile textures that hover at the edge of audibility, only to shift unexpectedly into dense noise or minimal tonal soundscapes. 

Oneiric (released in January 2025 on Confront Recordings) draws the listener into a peculiar state of suspended awareness: a place between daydream and waking life. Fascinating, because everything seems possible, while something unreal simultaneously touches reality and seeps into it.

The music is refined and skillful, yet remains natural and playful. There is frozen morning air that bursts into pearls at the first breath. Feathery ash lies beside melting crystal. A small, bare branch, draped in a quiet, sugary layer of snow, echoes the electron dance of stainless steel. All of this unfolds into a peculiar, otherworldly beauty that defies ordinary measures and stands entirely on its own.

Oneiric is one of those recordings I like to listen to when I need to sort myself out, when heart and mind need space, or when I simply want to dream, of a longing for subtle, fleeting elements that give life that precious ethereal glow in which the soul quickly feels at home. Perhaps that is why the trio calls itself Jane in Ether.
