Cedrik Fermont is much more than an experimental musician. The Berlin-based Belgian-Congolese composer, mastering engineer, author, radio host, concert organizer, and label founder (Syrphe) has been working for over three decades at the intersection of sound art, political engagement, and global research. His musical practice ranges from industrial and breakcore to electroacoustic composition, free improvisation, and sound art – both as a solo artist and in numerous collaborations around the world.
But Fermont’s work goes far beyond sound: as a sound activist and researcher, he is deeply committed to making marginalized music scenes visible, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His book Not Your World Music on noise music in Southeast Asia (co-authored with Dimitri della Faille and awarded the Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica) reflects this dedication, as do his openly anti-racist, anti-colonial, and vegan positions.
In this Artist Talk, Fermont will speak about sound as a means of resistance, decolonial perspectives in music, and his unique artistic practice, which bridges performance, research, and political responsibility. A conversation about sound, power, and identity – and about how music can open spaces for solidarity, resistance, and remembrance.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion.
