Pianist, composer, and sound researcher Magda Mayas is one of the most distinctive voices in the experimental music scene. Both analytical and intuitive, she opens up a sonic world that is constantly reinventing itself – where noise and tone, silence and movement enter into a living relationship.
What makes her work unique is a deep physical awareness and a radical form of listening. Mayas understands music as a process of attention – an event that unfolds between the musician, the instrument, and the listeners. Her playing is marked by concentration, empathy, and a quiet determination to get to the essence of things.
Alongside her artistic practice, Mayas is also active as an activist and curator. She is a member of the Berlin collective Khomasi, which, through its series Making Waves, organizes monthly screenings, talks, and lectures addressing topics such as freedom of expression, art as resistance, Palestine, and the current political situation in Germany.
The project defines itself as an open forum for empathy, critical thought, and solidarity. Making Waves provides a platform for the voices of Palestinians, Jews, racialized minorities, and other marginalized groups – taking a clear stance against polarization and silence.
Magda Mayas’s art and activism are closely intertwined. In both, her focus is on listening as an ethical practice – the ability to embrace complexity, sense resonance, and make encounters possible. As a person and as a musician, she is both uncompromising and sensitive, engaging in a continuous dialogue between curiosity, integrity, and responsibility.
We look forward to speaking with her in Sharing Realities about her perspective and activities, contributing to the ongoing discussions of our time.
